alien8r33d posted this interesting news:
For anyone who may still be interested, I am currently converting the old Amiga favourite Alien Breed for the GBA. It is being written in 100% assembler as are all my efforts.
It is about 80% complete. I have not released any WIPs since this site no longer seems to be updated. Last year I sent in a GBA electronics CAD program I wrote and it was never posted....
Should be a very interesting release when it happens.

How much is a really good old game worth to you? What if it was still in it's original shrink wrap? According to eBay, the right game can be worth quite a bit to the right people. A seller is currently hosting an auction for a sealed copy of Chrono Trigger for the Super Nintendo that has shot up to an amazing $420.55. With thirty bidders and a day and a half still left to place bids, something tells me it will go even higher. My question is, what will the winner do with their expensive prize? Will they open it and play with it or will it become a pricey knick-knack that will take up shelf space and no doubt garner the envy of hardcore Chrono Trigger fans.

The time for talk is over and the time for deliverance is here! Ladies and gentlemen, after over 5 years of work (periodic), the English translation of Emerald Dragon is out! At last, for better or for worse, the world has been graced with an English version of this game! It will be denied to you no more! So, cancel your plans, spread the word, and tell your friends. Its Emerald Dragon time!
This time around, Ive included a custom patcher, TransPatch (Windows only), that will only allow you to patch the correct copy of the game with the correct patch. Its about as newbie friendly as it gets. It will patch headered or non-headered games. Dont you dare create a topic in the forums or send me an e-mail on patching help unless youve given this utility a try! For everybody else, you can apply the patch soft or hard, however you please.
This patch has been tested on the real hardware, so copier players rejoice! As for emulators, Id recommend BSNES as its the only emulator that gets the sound right. It works OK on SNES9x and ZSNES, however notes stick in the music and sometimes instruments can be off pitch in certain songs. Otherwise it plays OK.
Please, as a personal favor to me for all my (and others) hard work, read the readme. Besides containing some important information, it contains plenty of information on the project, some of which you might find interesting, or even entertaining!
With that said, enjoy! Im probably going on ROMhacking vacation for awhile until I feel like returning to action on Tenshi No Uta, Heracles IV, or whatever other interesting projects I may have up my sleeve!

Tepples has released a new version of his Tetris Clone for the DS, GBA and Windows.
Heres whats new:
Docs: Most of TODO.txt has been converted to a numbered list of bugs (bug 0100).
An off-by-1/65536 error in enter below ceiling was fixed. This means it doesn't give one extra row of room to slide on at the top of the well (reported by Caithness and Kukuunen).
In case of a block out, draws the offending piece in the well before entering game over animation.
Extra 5-frame cascade delay removed.
With Lockdown set to Step reset, lock delay resets on the first floor kick.
Tengen rotation system tries kicking one space to the left (requested by zaphod77).
Options' names and values are looked up from fourCCs for future localizability.
Options: Names of speeds in fractions of 1G are computed.
Options skips unpacking options with a value of 255. This allows multiple pref structures to be unpacked on top of each other, and each overrides the ones before it.
Debrief displays options on a second page.
Debrief correctly displays soft drop speed as a fraction (0.41 regression, reported by Lardarse).
Debrief: PC specific parts moved to separate source code file.
Debrief uses a lower-level function to format ISO 8601 date and time so as not to bring in the floating-point library's space overhead on platforms without an FPU.
Debrief plays a sound when turning the page.
PC: Delay for holding Esc to quit no longer depends on display refresh rate. Instead, it uses the global 60 Hz timer (reported by Sara).
PC: Draws speedometer even when preview is at right, as long as there is room, that is, 3 or fewer next pieces (requested by Cubicz).
PC: Gimmick choice moved to Options to match GBA/DS.
PC: Select scenario before starting game (bug 0041).
PC options uses standardized GBA names (OPTIONS_*) instead of PC names (LJPREFS_*).
PC options Shift sound scale, Side, and Next position moved to skin.
PC options sets initial options using initOptions() from GBA/DS. Incidentally, this restores the initial randomizer to bag (0.41 regression and may make similar regressions less likely.
PC options uses unpackOptions() from GBA/DS.
PC options sound is also routed through the cross-platform sound manager.
PC: lj.ini uses fourCCs as names for easier saving and loading.
PC: Switching between windowed and full screen in Options no longer needs the user to restart the program.
PC: Skin controls window width and height (requested by Bloodstar).
PC: LJVorbis doesn't crash if polled while the music is stopped. This can happen when cross-platform code plays sound effects during debrief.
PC: Skin sets screen resolution (bug 0017).
PC/DS: Displays a description of some option values in addition to descriptions of options themselves.
GBA/DS: Options disabled on the PC are disabled here.
GBA: Menus are faster now that part of the text engine has been moved to fast RAM.
DS: Plays sound for game over (bug 0064).
DS: Options displayed on touch screen for future touch operation.
DS: Displays debrief after game ends (bug 0031).

CNET is running an article about tough technology, which aptly includes the Nintendo Game Boy, a device so tough that mine still works after many years. 'There's no two ways about it: the original Game Boy is one of the hardest gadgets ever conceived. Rumor has it this beige behemoth isn't made of plastic, but from the skulls of fallen Gurkhas. If you ever saw one that was broken, it's because it lost a boxing match with a nuclear bomb — on points.' So do you agree that the Game Boy is the toughest consumer electronics device ever made?

Taking Paper Mario to its logical -- albeit extreme -- conclusion, an artist / DIY'er named Keith Lam has created the first physical, playable implementation of Super Mario Brothers. By emphasizing Mario's movement on the background, and turning the "TV" into the object which moves, the character appears to traverse the familiar landscape of SMB, complete with collision detection, brick movement, and mechanized jumping. The "system" is built using a chain-driven platform, which is shakily directed with an actual NES (well, Famicom) controller, thus allowing for some game play -- though with response times like this, you're better off just watching.

Michael posted this:
For people who have a USB Gecko will be happy to know libdb has been updated with USB Gecko support. This allows remote debugging just like with the BBA in libogc.
You will however need the latest libogc build from the sourceforge CVS.
For the PC side of things all you need to do is follow these steps:
1. Go to device manager and select the device 'USB Serial Converter' which is the USB Gecko device.
2. Right click and select properties, then go to the 'advanced' tab.
3. Click the 'Load VCP' box so its selected then press ok.
4. Unplug the cable and then reinsert.
Your USB Gecko will now act as a com device and work in gdb just like with the BBA on Gamecube.
I think people will find this useful who are using Wii consoles. Please thank Shagkur if you do.
I plan to do a tutorial for setting up GDB but i thought i'd post it here first.

We love unique, video game inspired artwork just as much as the next guy -- our weary-spined copy of "i am 8-bit" can vouch for that. However, we also love our preserved, cherished memories of our NES era heroes. These two feelings conflict when looking at Jimi Benedict's surreal video game art -- our inner Andy Warhol loves Benedict's incredibly unique and lovingly detailed portraits, but the traditionalist in us prefers not to think of Link as a gap-toothed, Sloth-faced dwarf.
You can see both full portraits after the jump, but to see the rest of Benedict's art (including what appears to be a mock-up title screen to the lesser known NES game Obama: Take the Power Back), you'll have to go to his website -- a swirling vortex of complete madness and totally rad drawings.

PeterM posted this on his blog:
It’s been a while since I bought a GP2X and I’ve not done much coding for it. Partly this is due to the firmware start-up time — it takes about a minute to get from the Makefile copying the ELF onto my SD card to actually running the build.
I don’t know if this is a Linux problem (not too likely) or a GP2X problem (rather more likely), but a 30 or 40 second start-up delay for a portable game playing device is completely insane. I don’t know how GPH sleep easy at night!
But anyway, for a while I’ve had a GameCube port of Quake 2 in the works. It looks like it’s going to run fast enough but as usual with Quake 2 ports, memory is a problem. I’ve stripped out some memory hogs and tried to shrink down some allocations so while I’m fairly sure Quake 2 for GameCube will happen, I can’t make any promises.
In order to make Quake and Quake 2 development easier, as well as their GameCube versions I maintain a Win32 SDL version of both games. This lets me quickly compile and test platform independent changes without messing around with SD cards or adaptors or waiting for devices to boot.
Given that the GP2X comes with SDL installed I thought I’d quickly adapt my GameCube Makefile for a GP2X version and see how well it ran.
SlowCPU is sloooowwww!
The GP2X has no FPU and Quake 2 does a fair bit of floating point maths, even in the innermost span renderer. The end result is a frame rate just over 5 frames a second (compared to the GameCube’s “easy” 50 FPS).
The Cube is so cute and cuddly, but inside its cheeky purple shell lives a beefy monster!
Anyway, I noticed a few easy performance fixes and by making some changes managed to pretty much halve the time taken to render world spans on the Win32 build. I would imagine the GP2X build won’t see nearly that improvement though as I’ve not yet done any fixed point conversion.
I’ll leave the details of the changes for another time.

From afar, this may look like a real-life Wall-E robot, but it's actually a modded Gamecube, complete with tank treads.
First we build a movable platform out of a child toy and a rest of Plexiglas. The Gamecube itself is covered with a thin layer of acrylic which we airbrushed like the original wall-e. The Arms were made out of some plastic and plexiglas tubes and rods. The arms and the hands are both moveable so that wall-e can take up various positions

Remember back in the late '90s, when Square was so frustrated trying to fit their opus Final Fantasy VII onto the cartridge-based Nintendo 64 that they made their famous defection to Sony? Well, just a short decade later, China's Shenzhen Nanjing Technology Co, Ltd has apparently done what Square couldn't, squeezing the PlayStation epic onto a cartridge. And not just any cartridge .. a Famicom cartridge. How's it feel to be shown up, Square?
Of course, the conversion isn't perfect. According to a write-up from intrepid blogger CinnamonPirate (who unearthed the 2MB ROM from a Chinese blog) the polygonal graphics and cut scenes are gone, replaced with an impressively wide array of sprites, many stolen from other Final Fantasy games. The story remains surprisingly authentic, though, encompassing the entire three-disc epic while only leaving out a few optional side stories (bye bye, Yuffie and Vincent). The wide array of weapons, magic and materia from the original is a bit restricted in the port, but frankly, we're impressed that features like materia-leveling made it on to the 20+ year old hardware in any form.
The company behind the cart is apparently now primarily makes MP3 players, so our hopes for a Colecovision version of Final Fantasy XII will probably remain unfulfilled.

Brian sez, "Hi there. My wife made this quilt featuring Nintendo's Mario about five years ago. The quilt is made up of 16 different fabrics (4 bit color) and is 36 columns wide and 44 rows tall, roughly 6 feet wide by 8 feet tall. It hangs on the wall in our basement gameroom."

Ascot posted this release:
SNES9X 1.43 GX Edition
Please, keep source code when you made a change, this is an open source project.
All of you know how great is playing SNES games on Nintendo Gamecube, it's
awesome to play a lot of games that made us had a lot of fun in our childhood.
The version of this emulator was unupdated and almost forgotten, but (for me,
it's more) playable, and no body wanted to do something about it, so I decided
to make some changes to bring it to life.
*Bin file & source code are included in file.
Code:
Version 0.0.8 [20080222]
- Fixed displaying information about a ROM file.
- Added saving SRAM file in SD Card with CRC32 ROM data, no LFN format
(Must create snes9x\saves folders in your SD card, my mistake sorry).
- Menu in saving SRAM file changed to choose SLOT and DEVICE to Save/Load SRAM.
